Blood Sacrifice
Cullo's chariot raced toward Forgall's castle. He was eager to wed the beautiful Emery now that he'd fulfilled the requirements, but as he approached, he heard a great wailing. It was the Eve of Samhain, a festival that promised death to a chosen few, and this time, Emery's sister Derby had been chosen.
The Tirnogians had put a stop to this horrendous practice on Falinis, but it was alive and well in the Fomorian regions, where the Samhain hell-fires still burned with the flesh of humanoid sacrifices.
Emery's howls of grief echoed the loudest, carrying all through the castle and far out into the surrounding region. She loved her younger sister Derbforgaill, and believed that their family was protected, being the royal family. But there'd been much grumbling over favoritism among the Fomorians, and they were losing followers.
The druids thought it best for the king to give up one of his many daughters as a token of loyalty to the people. You didn't argue with the druids. In some ways, they were more powerful than kings. A prominent druid usually outlived many kings, as thrones tended to change hands a lot.
Derby waited on the beach for the Fomorians to sail in and pick her up, bound so that she could not run away, while the rest of the family stayed safe inside the castle. King Forgall was stricken with grief, but most of all guilt, as he'd many times reassured the girls that Samhain would never touch them, being the daughters of a king. The agonized howls of Derby's sisters were as much about the fear of being chosen for the next sacrifice, as they were about losing a sister.
Forgall sat on the floor in front of his throne, with his elbows on his knees, and his hands cradling his head as if it were too heavy for his neck to hold up. Over and over he repeated a blasphemous poem, which suggested that somebody ride in and rescue her against the very wishes of the gods.
Oh, the fates are cruel, my Derby girl,
you don't deserve to die!
If Moloch could send, a warrior friend,
to save you, I won't lie.
I'd promise your hand, unto this man,
forever I would vie!
